Welcome to the East Asian Studies program. Princeton University's doctoral program in East Asian Studies (EAS) is widely regarded as one of the foremost graduate programs of its kind globally. Our program provides Ph.D. training across various disciplines including Chinese and Japanese history and literature, Korean literature, cultural and media studies, Japanese anthropology, and transnational social/cultural studies of modern East Asia. The EAS department boasts 40 full-time faculty members and language instructors, complemented by visiting international professors and 13 additional East Asia specialists across departments like Art and Archaeology, Comparative Literature, Sociology, Religion, and Politics. This creates a dynamic scholarly community focused on East Asian research. All EAS historians hold joint appointments in the History Department. The extensive course offerings and diverse research specialties within the East Asian Studies Program and across Princeton University provide exceptional opportunities for students to explore various aspects of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean studies. Students can develop expertise across humanities disciplines, media studies, and social sciences through rigorous training. Research opportunities span traditional disciplines and interdisciplinary approaches, with focuses ranging from single-country studies to transnational perspectives, and covering historical periods from antiquity to modernity. The Graduate School's comprehensive website offers valuable information for prospective students, covering academic matters as well as practical considerations like housing, insurance, and benefits.
