The Department provides a Ph.D. program focused on East Asian Studies, offering concentrations in Chinese, Japanese, and East Asian Cultural Studies. Students pursuing the doctorate may earn an M.A. en route to completing their Ph.D.
The graduate curriculum prioritizes intensive language and textual analysis training while equally emphasizing historical, social, and cultural aspects of literary scholarship. Alongside conventional critical approaches, the program fosters engagement with contemporary challenges to traditional theoretical and methodological paradigms. Faculty expertise in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature and culture forms the program's core, while fostering interdisciplinary connections across UCI's academic community.
To equip graduates for both academic careers and research positions, all students must complete teaching assistantships under faculty guidance in relevant undergraduate courses within the Department.
