The Department of Central Eurasian Studies provides an extensive curriculum focused on Central Eurasia, the expansive core region bridging Europe and Asia. The Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy programs combine two key components: a specialized language (LOS), enabling students to engage with a region's culture through its native speakers, and a regional focus (ROS), covering diverse cultural aspects. Students may select any regularly offered departmental language for specialization, such as Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian, Turkish, Persian, Uzbek, Uyghur, Mongolian, or Tibetan, with potential options like Kurdish, Kyrgyz, and Kazakh pending approval from their Graduate Advisory Committee. Certain areas and languages, including Siberia (featuring Buryat, Evenki, Yakut, and others) and the Volga-Kama region (encompassing Mari, Mordvin, and related languages), may also be available for customized doctoral-level study.
