The Department provides a Ph.D. program focused on East Asian Studies, offering concentrations in Chinese, Japanese, and East Asian Cultural Studies. Students pursuing the doctoral degree may earn an M.A. along the way. The graduate curriculum prioritizes intensive language and textual analysis training while equally emphasizing historical, social, and cultural aspects of literary scholarship. Alongside conventional critical and theoretical approaches, the program fosters engagement with contemporary challenges to established methodologies. Faculty expertise spans key topics in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature and culture, while forging connections with UCI's broader academic community. Qualification Requirements

All applicants must meet the following minimum academic requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor‚Äôs degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California
  • Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0

TOEFL Score Requirements for Admission Consideration:

  • On the TOEFL iBT minimum score of 80
  • For the paper-based test, a minimum score of 550

IELTS Score Requirements for Admission Consideration:

  • An overall minimum score of 7 for admission, with a score of no less than 6 on any individual module.
  • Applicants who qualify for admission by the above criteria, and also achieve a score of 8 or higher on the Speaking module may be eligible to serve as a Teaching Assistant.
