The Global Cultures program is a forward-thinking undergraduate major within the School of Humanities, dedicated to examining globalization's challenges and dynamics through a humanistic lens. This major equips students with essential 21st-century analytical skills and insights crucial for navigating our interconnected world's complexities. Through this program, students gain valuable knowledge and practical tools that prepare them for diverse professional paths. Faculty deliver engaging lectures and, in upper-level courses, facilitate interactive seminar discussions. The curriculum embraces an interdisciplinary methodology, incorporating expertise from various departments across both Humanities (such as Art History, English, Film and Media Studies, History, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Spanish and Portuguese) and Social Sciences (including Anthropology, Chicano/Latino Studies, Political Science, and Sociology).
Current course offerings showcasing the program's diversity are available on the Global Cultures website. With its exceptionally wide-ranging curriculum, the program draws students from varied backgrounds into its vibrant academic community. Faculty members help students develop critical perspectives and practical skills applicable to both domestic and international careers. Global Cultures majors select primary and secondary areas of focus from designated options, typically centered on geographic regions. Students also have the option to create customized emphases with faculty guidance and program approval. All emphasis selections are made in collaboration with academic advisors and require committee endorsement.
Hispanic, U.S. Latino/Latina, and Luso-Brazilian Cultures: This concentration explores the historical, political, and cultural developments in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking regions worldwide, encompassing Iberia, Latin America, and U.S. Latino communities.
