The American Culture program at the University of Michigan provides undergraduates with diverse courses examining the United States' complex cultural and social dimensions, both in its global interactions and internal diversity. Recognized as one of the premier American studies departments globally, Michigan's Department of American Culture distinguishes itself through dynamic exchanges between its ethnic studies and digital studies programs, alongside interdisciplinary perspectives. Our curriculum incorporates diverse materials and methodologies from multiple disciplines, including history, literature, visual arts, music, film/media, and gender/sexuality studies. The program highlights America's societal diversity, focusing particularly on ethnic, gender, economic, and other social disparities. Simultaneously, it examines concepts of U.S. citizenship and national identity, encompassing both shared ideals and varied interpretations of American identity across time. These themes are explored through both historical and modern contexts in our coursework.
