Explore the dynamic interplay between cultural, political, and personal spheres shaped by media technologies and practices. The Culture and Media program at Lang examines media's connections to various cultural aspects like politics, economics, business, education, art, and entertainment. Develop essential research and production skills to critically assess both historical and modern media environments and cultural narratives.
Students and faculty in Culture and Media are dedicated to interpreting how diverse media forms shape our everyday experiences, as well as how individuals and communities can influence surrounding cultural and political environments.
By blending theory with practice, our students—whether scholars, writers, filmmakers, artists, or designers—acquire the analytical and creative abilities to actively participate in shaping the world through three key focus areas:
Cultural Studies: examining texts, identities, and representations through the lens of power dynamics
Media Studies: exploring the theories, histories, and applications of media, from photography to digital platforms
Screen Studies: mastering critical analysis and hands-on production techniques in filmmaking and cinema
The New School regularly organizes special events focused on media and culture, featuring film screenings, industry expert discussions, and platforms to present student work.
