The Interdisciplinary Studies program equips students with the ability to think critically and analytically across diverse academic fields. This adaptable program allows you to select courses that align with your personal interests and goals. Students complete 27 units in their chosen Emphasis area, while distributing the remaining coursework across three Concentrations (9 units each). Detailed information about Emphasis and Concentration options can be found on the emphases page.
The Global and Intercultural Understanding component fosters awareness of worldwide customs, traditions, social norms, achievements, and challenges among different populations. Through ethnographic studies, learners explore diverse global lifestyles while developing skills valuable for today's international job market. Course selections should highlight cultural and global approaches to historical and modern issues, demonstrating how nations interconnect economically, politically, socially, and culturally.
For the Emphasis theme, students must complete at least one course examining a culture beyond their own background, focusing on societies, literatures, or languages from regions generally outside the U.S., Canada, or Europe. Studies of Native American history and culture may also satisfy this requirement.
