Examining the worldwide Black experience has a rich and celebrated legacy. Rooted in diverse academic approaches, this discipline provides fresh perspectives on humanity. By employing empirical data, varied techniques, and scholarly frameworks, it delivers profound analysis of African diaspora communities across the Americas, Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and beyond. This naturally requires exploring local, national, transnational, diasporic, and global interconnections along with their historical contexts and convergences.
The discipline has produced compelling discoveries while establishing robust theoretical and evidentiary bases for methodically investigating African-descended communities in the U.S. and globally. Such research enhances comprehension of regional, national, cross-border, diasporic, and worldwide relationships and their historical developments. Since its inception, the field has maintained an interdisciplinary character, synthesizing multiple academic viewpoints to interpret Black life, particularly in the American context. The Black Studies Department embodies these enduring qualities and, through its curriculum, enables students to meaningfully engage with the complexity and variety of Black experiences.
The Department provides comparative courses on global Black experiences, teaching students to examine evolving concepts of identity, race, and racism across different eras and locations. This comprehensive approach to studying Black experiences represents a defining characteristic of the Department, setting it apart from comparable programs at other universities.
