Cultural Studies examines the connection between culture and significance, starting from the understanding that culture is neither impartial nor innate. The cultural studies program encourages students to explore how culture is created, the effects of engaging with and participating in culture, and how culture influences societies. Emphasizing critical thinking, theory, and social equity, this major focuses on analyzing culture through the lens of power dynamics. Essentially, it investigates how systemic issues like racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, classism, and other oppressive structures affect culture—and vice versa.
The cultural studies program helps students hone their writing, research, and communication abilities while exploring subjects they care deeply about. These skills prepare them to excel in critical analysis, cultural commentary, and advocacy.
Graduates of Towson University's cultural studies program pursue careers in diverse fields such as diversity and inclusion initiatives, legal and governmental sectors, journalism and publishing, technology, non-profit organizations, media and entertainment, community activism, and global affairs. Additionally, they gain a competitive advantage when applying for prestigious scholarships (such as Fulbright), programs like the Peace Corps, and graduate studies in various disciplines.
