The two-year MFA in Design program fosters interdisciplinary collaboration through research and practice grounded in social and environmental awareness. Our graduate students benefit from working alongside distinguished design faculty at a leading public research university. We prioritize full financial support for our students via Teaching Assistant (TA) and Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) roles. Participants collaborate with exceptional faculty both within the Design Department and across the wider university community. Faculty specialties span diverse design disciplines, including theory, exhibition design, fashion, history, information design, interactivity, interior architecture, immersive environments, lighting, product design, textiles, time-based media, visual communication, and wearable technology. The program actively promotes cross-disciplinary partnerships, connecting students with experts from arts and humanities to social sciences, from biological sciences to professional fields like medicine, law, and veterinary studies.
With a focus on Interior Architecture, the MFA in Design equips students to push boundaries in both design practice and theory. The program's core mission is developing interdisciplinary research skills, preparing future design leaders for complex challenges. While research possibilities are expansive, key areas of exploration include cost-effective housing solutions, inclusive design principles, technological applications for interior spaces (navigation systems, information accessibility, health-conscious environments, energy efficiency), and the rich cultural diversity of interior architecture worldwide.
