UC Davis's Sociology Ph.D. program focuses on thorough training in sociological theory and research methods as the foundation for academic excellence. Graduate students in sociology are urged to engage in research projects from the early stages of their studies. The curriculum covers specialized areas including social movements, cultural analysis, gender studies, economic sociology, legal systems, social psychology, racial and ethnic relations, migration patterns, and urban communities. Graduates develop both qualitative and quantitative expertise essential for careers in sociological research and education. Admission to the graduate program leads directly into Ph.D. studies, with the master's degree earned during progress toward the doctorate. Advancement in the Ph.D. program requires successful completion of all M.A. requirements.
The Designated Emphasis in Science and Technology Studies (STS) allows Ph.D. candidates to complement their primary studies with interdisciplinary perspectives on science-society relationships. Open to all qualified doctoral students, this program especially benefits those researching intersections between scientific practice, technological development, and social dynamics. Participants gain from examining historical case studies and contemporary analyses of how scientific knowledge and innovations circulate through society. The flexible curriculum draws from multiple departments, enabling students to develop interdisciplinary expertise. Participants join a vibrant STS academic community, attending specialized colloquia and the annual summer retreat to enhance their scholarly network.
