The Sociology Department provides a doctoral program focused on sociological studies. Key areas of study encompass social networks, gender dynamics, racial/ethnic studies, labor markets, social activism, family structures, migration patterns, demographic studies, political economics, and global societal changes. Students receive comprehensive instruction in sociological theories, statistical analysis, and both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. While maintaining a strong sociological foundation, the curriculum encourages interdisciplinary connections with fields like anthropology, legal studies, political science, historical analysis, criminal justice, and urban development strategies. Limited cohort sizes enable individualized guidance and foster strong faculty-student mentoring relationships. Faculty members employ varied theoretical frameworks and research methods to examine significant social phenomena, emphasizing evidence-based investigations of core sociological questions while welcoming interdisciplinary perspectives.
Advanced students can engage with multiple cross-disciplinary research centers, such as the Democracy Research Center, Global Peace and Conflict Studies Institute, Immigration and Public Policy Research Center, and Demographic and Social Analysis Center. The department collaborates with Gender Studies programs and cultural studies departments, including Asian American Studies, Chicano/Latino Studies, and African American Studies. Additional research support and financial resources are accessible through university-wide initiatives like Pacific Rim Research and the Humanities Research Institute at UCI.
