UC Davis's Sociology Ph.D. program focuses on thorough training in sociological theory and research methods as the foundation for quality academic work. Graduate students in Sociology are urged to engage in research projects from the early stages of their studies. The curriculum covers specialized topics including group dynamics and social activism, cross-cultural and historical analysis, gender studies, economic sociology, legal systems, social norms and regulation, political sociology, psychological aspects of society, racial and ethnic studies, migration patterns, as well as urban and community studies. Graduates develop both qualitative and quantitative expertise required for academic research and instruction in sociology. UC Davis's Sociology Ph.D. program prioritizes comprehensive training in theoretical frameworks and investigative techniques as the cornerstone of scholarly excellence. Those entering the Sociology graduate program are directly enrolled in the Ph.D. track, with the master's degree earned during progression toward the doctorate. Advancement in the Ph.D. program depends on successfully meeting all master's degree requirements.
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 minimum GPA in any field from an accredited college or university
The minimum scores required for admission to graduate study at UC Davis are:
550 on the TOEFL paper-based test (PBT), or
80 on the TOEFL internet-based test (iBT).
