The Microbiology Graduate Group provides a Ph.D. program focused on microbiology studies. This doctoral curriculum integrates theoretical education with hands-on training in contemporary molecular techniques for addressing microbiological challenges. While completion times vary by individual, most students finish within approximately five years. The program's objective is for each graduate to produce a dissertation offering novel insights to the field of microbiology. Throughout this journey, the group aims to equip students with the expertise and foundational understanding needed to pursue careers as independent researchers across academic, corporate, healthcare, or governmental sectors.

The Translational Research Designated Emphasis (DETR) represents a cross-disciplinary initiative enabling Ph.D. candidates to obtain specialized training in translational research. This educational component forms part of UC Davis's broader vision to establish a pioneering, collaborative translational research framework that transforms how we educate future scientists to tackle healthcare problems. The program's primary mission is to develop an inventive, economical, and enduring approach for training the next generation of Ph.D. biologists who will advance clinically significant fundamental research.
