The Microbiology Graduate Group provides cross-disciplinary, interdepartmental education that integrates theoretical and practical training in contemporary molecular techniques for addressing microbiological challenges. Research focuses span foundational, practical, and disease-related microbiology, encompassing bacterial and viral pathogenesis, eukaryotic microbiology, microbial genomics and genetics, microbial physiology and development, environmental microbiology and ecology, cancer biology, as well as bioengineering and bioremediation. Faculty employ molecular genetics to investigate microbial biology and utilize both microbial and non-microbial systems to examine cellular mechanisms such as recombination, stress responses, aging, cancer, DNA repair, and mutagenesis.

The Microbiology Graduate Group provides a Ph.D. program in microbiology, blending academic coursework with hands-on training in modern molecular methods for microbiological research. Program duration varies by student but generally takes 5.5 to 6 years to complete. The Ph.D. program aims to equip students to produce a dissertation that offers novel insights to microbiological science. Throughout this process, the program fosters the development of skills and foundational knowledge necessary for graduates to pursue careers as independent researchers in academic, industrial, healthcare, or governmental settings.
