Landscape architecture and environmental design focus on the connection between humans and their surroundings. This relationship is often expressed through the organization, creation, and utilization of both natural and built environments. Since design represents human intentions materialized in physical form, a key emphasis lies in how communities influence landscapes at various scales. The field operates as a reciprocal process where environmental design and landscape architecture continuously shape one another. Examining these interactions demands expertise in multiple disciplines including cultural studies, ecology, policy, economics, and historical contexts. A commitment to cross-disciplinary exploration and comprehension forms the foundation of the LAED program. Graduate research in this concentration might involve studying landscape configurations through geospatial analysis, advanced planning and design projects, investigations into the cultural heritage of spaces, or innovative approaches to community engagement in design processes.
