Materials science and engineering is the ideal major for you. You'll start with a demanding sequence of mathematics, natural sciences, and foundational engineering courses to build a strong base for advanced studies. At the upper-division level, you'll enroll in materials science and engineering (MSE) courses covering thermodynamics, structural evolution, phase transformations, kinetics of changes, and mechanical, electrical, and magnetic characteristics. Concurrently, you can opt to focus on one specialization such as biomedical engineering, biosystems engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, or mechanical engineering. No matter your chosen path, you'll gain expertise in core MSE principles, carry out experiments, and engage in laboratory analysis and materials testing. In your senior year, you must complete a capstone course in materials engineering design to synthesize your learning and ready yourself for industry roles or graduate studies.
We train students in the core concepts of materials science and engineering, blending theory with real-world applications, develop them into independent, analytical thinkers who excel in team settings, instill a sense of community, ethical duty, and professional conduct, prepare them for careers across industry, government, and academia, emphasize the importance of ongoing education and self-improvement, and enhance their skills in written and verbal communication. Students are advised to strictly follow all prerequisite guidelines. Instructors have the authority to remove students from courses if prerequisites are not met.
Freshman applicant will be completing or have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university.
