Pursuing a Russian major starts with sequential language courses that build proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking Russian within two years. Advanced coursework covers higher-level language skills, literary analysis through Russian literature classes, and cultural studies exploring Russia's rich history and traditions. Mastering Russian creates diverse career pathways in international affairs, legal fields, tech industries, and government roles. It's also among the most prevalent foreign languages spoken in Sacramento and San Francisco regions. The curriculum develops comprehensive Russian language abilities while introducing students to Russia's intellectual heritage through its literature, customs, and social structures.
Russian students can gain practical experience through translation and interpretation internships with Northern California schools and corporations. Graduates often pursue business careers or advanced degrees in Slavic studies and global affairs. The department recommends combining Russian studies with complementary disciplines like global relations, political science, computing, cultural anthropology, or economics to broaden professional opportunities.
