The English Department provides undergraduate students with opportunities to examine diverse literary forms—including poetry, plays, novels, and essays—drawn from British, American, and global English-language traditions. Our program features courses in creative writing, film studies, media studies, journalism, rhetoric, and theater arts. Whatever your passions, we'll assist you in discovering suitable independent research or internship options.
Participants in our courses:
Examine poetic, dramatic, fictional, and nonfictional works spanning British and American literary traditions
Analyze cinematic works and other media forms
Hone their creative writing abilities and theatrical performance skills
Investigate journalism, rhetoric, and argumentation studies
Every class fosters inquisitive thinking and analytical discussion, consistently working to enhance students' knowledge, critical evaluation skills, and proficiency as both readers and writers.
Our language, media, and communication (LMC) concentration within the English major enables students to customize their studies by combining departmental offerings in rhetoric, media studies, film, linguistics, nonfiction writing, journalism, and public speaking with relevant courses from other disciplines.
This concentration particularly appeals to students considering professions in law, nonfiction writing, publishing, print media, or broadcast journalism, while maintaining a balanced focus on theoretical, historical, and practical dimensions.
