Western Michigan University provides two Spanish major pathways. The College of Arts and Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts program focused on language, literature, and cultural studies. Alternatively, the College of Education and Human Development provides a teaching degree program encompassing language, literature, linguistics, and cultural studies.
Both programs emphasize Spanish cultural education. Core classes include beginner through advanced Spanish language instruction, along with studies of Spanish-American cultures, U.S. Hispanic communities, literary works, and linguistic principles. Students collaborate with advisors to select complementary electives. While sharing similarities with the arts curriculum, the education track includes specialized training for teaching Spanish in secondary schools.
A first-year applicant is a student who is applying for admission and who has not attempted or earned any college credit after graduating from high school/secondary school (or earned equivalent).
