With over 400 million speakers globally, Spanish ranks as the world's second most spoken native language after Chinese, according to Ethnologue. It serves as an official language in more than 20 nations and numerous international institutions. Within the United States, Spanish continues to expand as a primary or secondary language, with the U.S. Census Bureau noting that over 37.5 million Americans speak Spanish at home. Furthermore, it holds status as one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Hispanic cultures have significantly influenced various fields including arts, literature, philosophy, and architecture throughout history. These factors make a Spanish degree excellent preparation for careers in business, social services, government, healthcare, communications, education, or any field valuing bilingual communication skills and cultural competency.

Though electives are available, specific required courses must be completed for degree completion, so careful planning is essential.
