Ranking as the sixth most widely spoken language globally, French is used across all continents except Antarctica. Projections suggest that by 2050, French could become the world's most spoken language, driven by demographic expansion in sub-Saharan Africa. Multilingualism provides significant competitive edge in today's job market. As one of the United Nations' official languages, French holds international importance. Our program offers deep immersion into France's language, literature, and culture, as well as the broader Francophone world.
The French Major with a French Civilization concentration allows students to select French language courses, improve both written and oral communication abilities, and supplement their General Education with civilization and culture electives. Students may participate in Study Abroad options, including academic year programs or our summer initiative in Nice, France.
This curriculum merges the BA in French requirements with those needed for P-12 French Teacher Certification. To qualify for state teaching certification, students complete 39 credits in French studies (covering language, literature, and Francophone culture) alongside mandatory Teacher Education courses. Study Abroad opportunities are available year-round or through our summer program in Nice.
