The German major systematically builds a strong foundation in German grammar, vocabulary, listening comprehension, and conversational abilities (including idioms and slang), along with broader studies of German literature and culture. The literary component deepens understanding of linguistic subtleties and cultural contexts within important historical frameworks, covering events from both World Wars and the Holocaust to the Cold War's Berlin Wall division and Germany's 1990 reunification.
This program equips students for overseas study or independent research in German-speaking nations (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and supports graduate work in fields requiring German language proficiency beyond German Studies.
Additionally, the major prepares students for personal or professional engagement in German-speaking environments. Many students pursue advanced independent research projects (with faculty guidance), often as Departmental Honors Theses, and frequently compete for prestigious awards like Fulbright Scholarships to fund postgraduate studies in Germany.
