The Berkeley Group in Buddhist Studies provides an interdisciplinary PhD program focused on Buddhist Studies. Working in collaboration with the Departments of South and Southeast Asian Studies (SSEAS) and East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC), the program explores Buddhism's diverse manifestations within their Asian historical and cultural frameworks.

Students engage with Buddhist texts in their original languages while examining the historical, social, and cultural contexts that shaped this textual tradition. The PhD curriculum also encourages the use of archaeological, ethnographic, and visual materials to enrich the study of Buddhist traditions.

Our program aims to equip students with linguistic, methodological, and theoretical tools for groundbreaking research while fostering connections between their work and broader humanities discourse.

This PhD program is tailored for those pursuing academic careers as scholars and university educators in Buddhist Studies.
