Doctoral candidates focusing on Ancient Christianity can pursue this specialization as part of the Early Mediterranean and West Asian Religions (EMWAR) program. Yale University's Department of Religious Studies has educated numerous academic and intellectual leaders across generations. The graduate program offers eleven distinct Fields of Study, each with unique admission criteria and curricula. EMWAR is an interdisciplinary initiative that fosters specialized research and teaching capabilities in traditional disciplines like Second Temple Judaism, New Testament studies, Ancient Christianity, and Rabbinic Judaism, as well as cross-disciplinary specializations including Scriptural Interpretation in Antiquity, Sasanian-era West Asian Religions, Hellenistic Eastern Christianity and Judaism, among others. This adaptable program facilitates historical, literary, and comparative examinations of religious texts, traditions, material artifacts, and cultural developments across the Mediterranean and West Asia from the Hellenistic era (3rd century BCE) through early Islamic times (10th century CE). Students can further refine their philological skills through the optional Language Concentration Track (LCT).
