The Building Science, Technology, and Sustainability faculty at Berkeley investigate indoor environmental quality and methods for creating optimal conditions while conserving energy and resources. Their research examines various environmental factors (thermal, lighting, air quality, acoustics) that impact both physical comfort and psychological well-being. The core aim of graduate studies in building science is to understand how buildings influence occupants, assess the human, economic, and energy impacts, and apply these insights to develop better design approaches.
An additional goal involves preparing students for careers in building science through participation in Berkeley's funded research projects and involvement with professional organizations where research findings are shared, discussed, and translated into practical design solutions.
