The Rural Community Health Scholars (RCHS) program is designed for aspiring rural primary care physicians who don't yet qualify for the Rural Medical Scholars (RMS) program. RCHS participants must meet identical rural Alabama residency criteria as RMS students - either having spent at least 8 childhood years in rural Alabama or being graduates of a rural Alabama high school. Many RCHS students utilize the Master of Science program as a stepping stone to RMS eligibility, showcasing their graduate-level academic capabilities while enhancing their admission test performance. Those who don't transition to RMS can opt to finish their degree or apply to other programs.
Both program tracks - RMS and RCHS - mandate completion of at least 30 credit hours. The RMS track spans one year, while RCHS requires two years. All participants take foundational core courses along with track-specific requirements and approved electives. RCHS students who gain RMS acceptance during their first spring semester will shift to the RMS curriculum for their second year. Those who remain in RCHS will continue with their designated second-year coursework.
