The Occupational & Environmental Epidemiology (O.E.E.) program equips M.P.H. students with the expertise to study how chemical pollutants and non-chemical stressors in residential, occupational, and community settings affect human health. Our research focuses on diverse exposures such as air contaminants, heavy metals, agricultural chemicals, temperature extremes, plastic additives, fibrous minerals, and sound pollution. Investigated health effects span from childhood conditions like respiratory illnesses, neurodevelopmental disorders, and pregnancy outcomes to adult health concerns including heart disease, metabolic disorders, cognitive decline, and lifespan reduction. Faculty members assess exposure levels, analyze exposure-health relationships, study genetic-environmental interplay and epigenetic changes, create innovative analytical approaches for complex pollutant combinations, and evaluate public health intervention efficacy. This interdisciplinary initiative bridges the Epidemiology and Environmental Health Sciences departments. While all O.E.E. track M.P.H. candidates should demonstrate interest in epidemiological principles and environmental/occupational exposures, those favoring methodological epidemiology might choose Epidemiology as their primary department, whereas students seeking deeper exposure science training to complement epidemiological research may opt for Environmental Health Sciences. The 60-credit O.E.E. M.P.H. curriculum typically spans four academic terms (two years) for completion.
