The Department of Art and Art History provides an MFA program that allows students to focus on various artistic fields while developing compelling creative works as they train to become professional visual artists and instructors. Established in 1972, the program has propelled countless artists into successful creative professions worldwide. Intentionally small class sizes ensure students receive individual studio space and personalized faculty mentorship. The MFA curriculum consists of 60 credit hours across graduate studio courses, seminars, art history studies, critique sessions, and elective options. Students must finish all degree requirements within six years of starting the program. Throughout their studies, graduate candidates deliver public presentations and showcase their work, concluding with a written thesis and final exhibition.
Main studio facilities occupy Woods Quad, while Sculpture and Ceramics operate from the Bureau of Mines complex. Garland Hall houses the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, which hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions and maintains a growing collection focused on works on paper and photography. Woods Hall's Sella-Granata Art Gallery features a dynamic exhibition calendar highlighting student creations and other educationally oriented displays.
