The Applied Physics program enables students to earn a PhD while concentrating on research areas beyond conventional fundamental physics. This interdisciplinary degree combines core physics coursework with specialized graduate classes in related science and engineering disciplines tailored to each student's research focus. The physics and astronomy program equips graduate students with both academic knowledge and practical research skills, preparing them for careers in university teaching and research or for R&D roles in industrial and government labs. The curriculum benefits not only physics and astronomy students but also graduate candidates from chemistry, mathematics, geosciences, and engineering fields. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program aims to develop deep professional expertise and research methodology proficiency. Degree candidates must demonstrate comprehensive understanding of their field and independent research capabilities, along with clear written and oral communication skills. While coursework completion, residency, and technical requirements are mandatory, the PhD is awarded based on these broader competencies rather than just fulfilling these basic criteria.
