The Physics Ph.D. program is a Purdue University degree administered by the Department of Physics.
Research specialties in the Physics Department encompass biological physics, atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) physics, condensed matter physics, and physics education research. Cross-disciplinary work is encouraged, with active partnerships between our faculty and colleagues across the School of Science, IU School of Medicine, School of Engineering and Technology, and School of Informatics.
Graduate students collaborate with their advisor and advisory committee to design a customized study plan. This involves conducting significant research under faculty guidance, culminating in a dissertation submitted to the graduate school. The process concludes with a public defense and committee examination.
The doctoral program mandates 90 total credit hours, including core physics coursework, three approved specialization courses, and an original research project resulting in a formal dissertation.
