The field of Earth and environmental sciences (EES) combines chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and computer science to examine Earth and planetary systems, encompassing atmospheric, aquatic, terrestrial, geological, and climatic components. Research in global systems explores planetary formation and transformation processes, from their initial development to the present day, applying these insights to predict future conditions.
The EES department's goal merges cutting-edge scientific inquiry with top-tier education to deepen our comprehension of Earth, its climate, and other celestial bodies, while equipping students to thrive in a dynamic global environment.
PhD candidates in geosciences at the University of Rochester typically complete three to five semesters of rigorous coursework (both within and outside the department) before their qualifying exams. Early research initiation is encouraged, with full-time research expected post-exams. A key educational component involves graduate students assisting with undergraduate instruction during their initial years.
