The Physics Department at New Mexico State University provides graduate programs leading to Ph.D. and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees. Our department currently enrolls approximately 40 graduate students, with the majority pursuing doctoral studies while receiving financial support through Graduate Assistantships (including Teaching and Research Assistantships). Annually, we admit between five to ten new students based on available positions. Graduates from our program secure positions in academic research teams, government agencies, and industrial research facilities after completing their advanced degrees.Students can specialize in diverse experimental and theoretical/computational research fields within our department. Our primary research focuses encompass particle and nuclear physics, condensed matter physics/materials science, and geophysics. These initiatives receive substantial funding from multiple federal sources and benefit from collaborations with two New Mexico-based national laboratories: Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories. Beyond our internal research, we maintain active partnerships with several national research facilities including Brookhaven National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory, and Fermilab.
