The UNM Physics and Astronomy Department's PhD program enables students to pursue both theoretical and experimental research across diverse subfields. Our faculty includes 28 regular members from Physics and Astronomy and Optical Science and Engineering programs, supplemented by numerous adjunct and part-time instructors, postdoctoral researchers, and more than 100 undergraduate and graduate students each. The department operates from the state-of-the-art Physics and Astronomy and Interdisciplinary Science (PAIS) facility.
Several specialized research centers call our department home, including the New Mexico Center for Particle Physics, the Quantum Information and Control Center, and the Astrophysical Research and Technology Center. Students frequently collaborate with the Optical Science and Engineering Graduate Program, the High Technology Materials Center, and nearby institutions like Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories, the Air Force Research Lab, and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
