The National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Precise Advanced Technologies and Health Systems for Underserved Populations (PATHS-UP) aims to tackle the significant challenge of reducing the health and economic impacts of diabetes and heart disease in underserved communities. The dual-degree program, combining a BS in Industrial Engineering with an MPH in Occupational Safety and Health, meets the growing demand for engineers trained in healthcare to enhance public wellbeing in disadvantaged regions. Specifically, our engineering students will gain hands-on experience with prevalent health challenges in these communities while developing technologies to address common limitations of point-of-care medical devices. Another key objective of PATHS-UP involves cultivating a diverse generation of scientists and engineers who will pioneer health-improving technologies for underserved populations. This integrated degree program directly supports this secondary mission, thereby contributing to the primary goal.
