During their second year, candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive examination and collaborate with a faculty advisor to produce a thesis or final project that fulfills the program's culminating requirement. This degree accommodates part-time enrollment. The M.A. serves as excellent preparation for doctoral studies in art history or related disciplines, while also leading to professional opportunities in museums, galleries, education, publishing, non-profit organizations, and corporate sectors. Stony Brook University's Graduate Programs in Art History & Criticism concentrate on modern and contemporary visual culture, cultivating scholars, critics, curators, and practitioners capable of examining global art through current theoretical frameworks. Current research specialties include media aesthetics, art and technology integration, public art initiatives, avant-garde political dimensions, photographic studies, film analysis, and critical curatorial methodologies. The program features an interdisciplinary curriculum with personalized guidance from internationally renowned faculty. Students enjoy collaborative opportunities with studio art departments and cross-disciplinary engagement with Philosophy, History, Music, Computer Science, and Engineering programs.
