The Department of Africana Studies (AFS) within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) provides interdisciplinary graduate programs culminating in either a Master of Arts degree or a Graduate Certificate in Africana Studies. Designed for those seeking deeper insight into our interconnected world, these programs explore the global experiences of African diaspora communities throughout history. The M.A. curriculum challenges conventional academic perspectives by utilizing African epistemologies and worldviews as transformative frameworks for human knowledge. Both the M.A. and Graduate Certificate (GC) programs address the growing demand for advanced scholarship on African-descended populations (encompassing the United States, Caribbean/Latin America, and Africa) while fostering career advancement across diverse fields where Black cultural literacy is essential. These fields include education, healthcare, law, public administration, social services, museum studies, film studies, and academia. Additionally, our graduate credentials strengthen competitiveness for doctoral programs in disciplines such as Cultural Studies, English, History, Philosophy, Social Work, Sociology, and related fields.
