The interdisciplinary Asian and Asian American Studies program merges social science and humanities approaches through an integrated curriculum rooted in area studies and ethnic studies. This program provides students with specialized knowledge about specific Asian regions, deeper cultural understanding, insights into pressing global issues affecting Asia and the U.S., and awareness of Asian American histories and contributions. The curriculum incorporates Asian language instruction, regional specialization, and interdisciplinary coursework focused on thematic studies. It pairs well with minors in China, Japan, Korea, or South Asian Studies, as well as Religious Studies programs. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in Study Abroad opportunities, with Stony Brook offering summer programs in China, Japan, and India, plus academic year programs in China, Japan, and Korea, with additional international programs in development.

Departmental academics are enhanced by resources from affiliated centers including China Studies, India Studies, Japan Studies, Korean Studies, the Asian American Center Bridge, and the Charles B. Wang Center. These collaborate across disciplines and communities to foster contemporary understanding of Asian and Asian American issues. The department maintains robust connections with academic institutions in Asia and Asian American organizations throughout Long Island and New York. Stony Brook's location near NYC's vibrant Asian communities provides exceptional cultural and intellectual opportunities. Graduates pursue diverse careers in arts, business, education, government, media, and more, with many students opting for double majors to enhance their prospects. The program also prepares students for advanced graduate and professional studies.
