Merge your passion for physics and engineering to pioneer advancements in the latest generation of optical technologies.
Optics is integral to everyday devices, such as the optical fibers transmitting internet data and the displays, cameras, and sensors in smartphones, robotics, and autonomous vehicles, positioning optical engineering as an expanding discipline.
Optical engineering, or photonics engineering, is a distinctive field blending engineering and physics. At Stevens, this concentration offers a solid grounding in core engineering topics like circuits and thermodynamics, alongside specialized instruction in designing optical instruments, lasers, metrology, optical communications, and contemporary photonic devices.
Stevens' Physics Department faculty possess extensive expertise in optics. Students will study under internationally recognized authorities—including two Optical Society of America fellows and an Optics Letters editor—and acquire practical skills in the department's three advanced optics teaching laboratories.
