The field of atmospheric and oceanic sciences examines every facet of the atmosphere and physical oceanography, their interconnected dynamics, and how they interact with space and Earth's broader systems. While weather prediction remains a key objective, this discipline encompasses far more: analyzing movements across varying scales, studying climates from past to future, investigating atmospheric chemistry and air quality, exploring cloud formations and precipitation, and examining solar and terrestrial radiation. Cutting-edge remote-sensing technologies, including satellite systems, are frequently employed to map circulation patterns globally and locally.
Introductory atmospheric and oceanic sciences courses often fulfill natural or physical science requirements for undergraduates. Students with strong math and physics backgrounds may pursue advanced coursework to supplement their primary studies in other scientific disciplines. Majors gain foundational knowledge through core courses focused on atmospheric and oceanic physics and dynamics. Senior year offers specialized electives, with concentrations available in weather systems, earth/environmental science, and applied atmospheric/oceanic studies. These elective paths are customizable - some students prepare for careers in forecasting, environmental consulting, or media, while others build foundations for graduate studies leading to diverse professional opportunities.
Applicant must have high school record should demonstrate both rigor and breadth in the types of course work you pursue. A competitive academic record should show some of the most challenging advanced-level work offered at or through your school in as many areas as possible, while maintaining a strong GPA. The following chart shows the number of years that most admitted students studied in each subject area; English 4 years, Math 4 years, Social Studies 3-4 years, Science 3-4 years, Single Foreign Language 3-4 years and Additional Academic/Fine Arts 2 years. Applicant must have ACT score of 30 and overall SAT score of 1395.
