The Master of Arts in East Asian Studies from the Center for East Asian Studies enables students to create a customized interdisciplinary curriculum aligned with their academic passions and professional aspirations. This graduate program aims to deepen expertise in East Asian Studies while equipping learners for either professional advancement or PhD programs. Students accomplish this through specialized coursework, independent research projects, and intensive language study. The flexible M.A. structure permits varied combinations of language acquisition, interdisciplinary regional studies, and focused disciplinary study. Requirements include achieving third-year proficiency in Chinese, Korean, or Japanese (verified through Stanford coursework or advanced placement exams), completing a one-unit East Asian Studies core course, and taking nine graduate-level area studies courses (with three concentrated in one department). The program culminates with an M.A. thesis, typically developed from an expanded graduate seminar paper.
Applicants from colleges and universities of recognized standing who hold a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent are eligible to be considered for admission for graduate study. English Proficiency: TOEFL - Your minimum score must be 100 (internet based) OR 600 (paper based).
