The Sociology Department at Stanford provides an intensive PhD program focused on developing sociological expertise and research methodologies, equipping graduates for thriving careers in the field. Distinguished by its globally recognized faculty, innovative research initiatives, and strong faculty-student mentorship, our program fosters academic excellence. Students enhance their research capabilities and subject matter proficiency through a combination of academic courses, seminars, research positions, and teaching opportunities. Partnering with Stanford Law School and various campus research centers, we provide a JD/PhD dual degree option and a cross-disciplinary setting for students to explore diverse sociological interests.
Applicants from colleges and universities of recognized standing who hold a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent are eligible to be considered for admission for graduate study. English Proficiency: TOEFL - Your minimum score must be 100 (internet based) OR 600 (paper based).
