The Graduate Group in Sociology and Demography (GGSD) provides an interdisciplinary social sciences education tailored for students with diverse academic interests. Combining resources from Berkeley's Sociology and Demography Departments, the program delivers a challenging and enriching learning environment. This curriculum particularly focuses on the convergence between sociological and demographic studies. Research opportunities span various topics such as: historical population trends, social hierarchy, disparities, racial and ethnic studies, population dynamics, demographic shifts, human-environment relationships, economic progress, migration patterns, global interconnectedness, gender studies, family structures, childhood development, sexual health, age-related issues, healthcare systems, reproductive health, and contraceptive methods.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
The following minimum requirements apply to all graduate programs and will be verified by the Graduate Division:
