The study of Classics examines the written works and physical artifacts of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, encompassing their languages, literary texts, philosophical thought, historical records, artistic creations, and archaeological findings. The undergraduate Classics program aims to equip students with comprehensive knowledge centered on these ancient societies' literary and material heritage. Stanford's Classics curriculum additionally investigates links between antiquity and contemporary society, along with niche disciplines like ancient economic systems, legal frameworks, manuscript studies, and scientific developments. Faculty members employ an interdisciplinary methodology that spans diverse regions, eras, and subject areas. While focusing on Greco-Roman traditions, the program also investigates cultural exchanges that shaped the ancient Mediterranean world and their enduring global impact on human civilization.
A high school diploma or the equivalent is required in order to enroll at Stanford. Generally, we receive English proficiency exam results (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, etc.) from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English.
