Classics explores the languages, cultures, and societies of ancient Greece and Rome. The curriculum includes instruction in Latin and ancient Greek languages and literature, along with studies of Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Near Eastern civilizations. Students pursuing a Classics major or minor can select from three focus areas: Classical Civilization, Ancient Greek Language and Literature, or Classical Latin Language and Literature. At UWM, students may opt to study Latin or ancient Greek to meet language requirements or take Classics courses to complement their primary field of study.
Classics examines the ancient Greek and Roman worlds—their languages, literary works, historical events, philosophical ideas, artistic achievements, and cultural practices. UWM offers concentrations in classical civilization, Greek language and literature, or Latin language and literature. Engaging with ancient societies provides tangible advantages. Classics students enjoy high acceptance rates into graduate programs due to their strong analytical and communication skills. Additionally, the program develops versatile abilities in research, critical thinking, and effective communication, preparing graduates for careers in education, law, museums, media, government, nonprofits, performing arts, and beyond.
