Offers an interdisciplinary exploration of African diaspora studies as a fundamental aspect of American society. The undergraduate program in African and African American Studies aims to equip students with a cross-disciplinary understanding of African-descended populations as integral to American cultural development. The curriculum encourages scholarly inquiry that transcends traditional academic divisions while offering research training and community-based learning experiences. Study options span diverse fields including anthropology, visual arts, economics, education, performing arts, historical studies, language systems, literary analysis, musical traditions, philosophical inquiry, political theory, psychological research, religious studies, and sociological perspectives. This program prepares students for advanced academic pursuits or professional pathways. Our goal is to deliver an exceptional, challenging, and stimulating educational journey where students develop both discipline-specific analytical capabilities and interdisciplinary research competencies. The African American Studies program provides particularly valuable preparation for those pursuing graduate education or careers in teaching, literary analysis, media, legal practice, corporate environments, global affairs, government, mental health professions, anthropological research, social sciences, theatrical arts, performance studies, and cultural examination, among numerous other fields.
A high school diploma or the equivalent is required in order to enroll at Stanford. Generally, we receive English proficiency exam results (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, etc.) from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English.
