Previously known as the Program in American Studies, Culture, Advocacy, and Leadership has evolved into an innovative interdisciplinary program designed for students passionate about making a difference. By connecting academic knowledge with real-world applications—whether locally in Nashville, nationally, or globally—CAL combines deep cultural insights with ethical advocacy principles and versatile leadership training. This approach equips graduates for diverse postgraduate opportunities or career trajectories.
The CAL curriculum offers both framework and flexibility. Following foundational CORE Part I requirements, students collaborate with faculty advisors to select courses—both within and beyond CAL—that align with their specialized Area Focus. This customizable structure enables students to address contemporary challenges such as legal systems and social justice, sports and society, international affairs and human rights, conflict resolution, global migration patterns, business leadership and economic equity, pop culture's influence on American ideals, environmental sustainability, and beyond. After completing their Area Focus, students progress to CORE Part II, engaging in meaningful civic projects that emphasize ethical leadership and collaborative community partnerships. The program culminates with a senior capstone course, allowing students to synthesize and reflect on their transformative journey.
All candidates for admission must present transcripts of work completed in high school.
