Individuals holding a CACREP-accredited master's degree in a different counseling specialization, like school counseling, can pursue an Advanced Certificate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC). This 24-credit program, primarily offered full-time at the Queens campus, usually takes one year to complete. As part of the curriculum, students must undertake two 300-hour clinical internships during summer and fall terms. The certificate fulfills New York's educational prerequisites for Mental Health Counseling licensure when paired with a CACREP master's degree. Applicants from non-CACREP counseling programs might need to take supplementary coursework. Those with master's degrees in unrelated fields such as psychology or social work do not qualify. Enrollment for the Advanced Certificate occurs exclusively during the spring semester (January).
