Life of the Mind. Grounded in the scientist-practitioner approach, SF State's I/O Psychology Program thrives in fostering growth and innovation. We champion continuous learning through diverse methods that extend beyond conventional education. Students engage in intimate seminar-style I/O psychology classes (8-14 students), complete a practical internship in their second year, and can choose between a research thesis or comprehensive exam as their final requirement. Additional opportunities include faculty-led consulting projects, research lab participation, and business electives from the College of Business.
Equity. SF State stands at the forefront of promoting campus diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect. Our student body reflects varied backgrounds, professional experiences, and research interests. We welcome aspiring professionals, working adults seeking HR and management skills, and future doctoral candidates. Faculty actively investigate organizational equity matters, including fair hiring practices and policies safeguarding LGBTQ+ workers.
Courage. We empower faculty and students to embrace challenges, voice their perspectives, and advocate for their values. The program offers multiple platforms for self-expression and idea-sharing. As Science & Engineering students, graduates present at university exhibitions, national conferences, and explore concepts in small seminars. Faculty labs address pressing business and societal challenges, yielding publications in leading journals and securing government grants.
Community. Achievement stems from strong university and local connections. As applied scientists, we value giving back through psychological applications that benefit San Francisco and beyond. Faculty share insights on organizational improvement and employee wellness, while internships connect students with Bay Area organizations. Many alumni work locally and frequently return to share industry insights about contemporary I/O psychology.
